The Portugal D7 Visa, often referred to as the Passive Income Visa or Retirement Visa, is established under the framework of Portuguese immigration law, specifically designed to accommodate non-EU/EEA/Swiss nationals who wish to reside in Portugal while living off a stable passive income. The legal foundation for the D7 Visa is primarily derived from Law No. 23/2007, of July 4, which governs the conditions for entry, stay, exit, and removal of foreigners in Portuguese territory.
According to Portuguese law, the applicant must prove that they hold a minimum income. This minimum income varies according to the number of family members that compose the applicant’s household and should be transferred to their Portuguese bank account.

The expected timeframe for the application process is 6 months. The first stage of the document collection can differ in length depending on the applicant’s ability to gather the documents. Within 4 months of visa issuance, you submit your residence permit application to the Portuguese Immigration Authorities. A decision is typically made within 90 days.
Your residence permit is issued and is valid for 2 years, renewable for an additional 3 years, subject to compliance with residency requirements.
